How to read ukulele tablature

It’s very easy to read ukulele tablature. The lines are not a staff; they are a picture of the strings. The highest string, A, (the “fleas” in “My Dog Has Fleas”) is on top. It’s the same for guitar; the highest string goes on top.

A|—————————–|
E|—————————–|
C|—————————–|
G|—————————–|

The numbers are which fret you play on that string. You read the tab left to right, like a book. When you see a 0, that is open string. The 1 is 1st fret. The 2 means 2nd fret. The 3 means play the 3rd fret. Below, you play A 3rd fret, then open E, C G, C, E. This is a finger plucking pattern for the C chord.

XA|----3------------------------|
xE|--------0---------------0----|
xC|------------0-------0--------|
xG|----------------0------------|

Chords in Tablature

Usually chords are above the lyrics. You can write them in tablature also. All the numbers lined up in a column, you pluck at the same time. Below, there are the chords F G C Am D7 and G7.

A|----0---2---3---0---3---2----|
E|----1---3---0---0---2---1----|
